Get Your Adjectives In Order

As writers, we need to be able to describe the world around us. Thankfully we have some little wonders to help us: adjectives.

But did you know that adjectives are written in particular, defined orders?

If we get our adjectives in the wrong order they create a yawn-inducing list instead of inspiring a compelling and detailed image in our readers’ minds

Get your adjectives in order.

Let’s see what I mean. How does this sentence sound?

“I love it when those silver, professional-looking, big, three coffee machines whirr into action when I walk in.”

“I love it when those three, big, professional-looking, silver coffee machines whirr into action when I walk in.”

What witchcraft is this that turns a clunky list into a compelling description!? It’s actually really simple.

Check out the infographic below, then go and describe with confidence this world (or should I say: this one beautiful huge warm old round blue and green, sea and sand living world!?)
